Has anyone else had a character (one of the front rank fighters, at close
to full Health of 400-500 points) suddenly die in an encounter, without
anyone else in the party being hurt? Any idea whether this is the result
of some sort of spell or just a critical hit? It's pretty intimidating
when it happens! It's happened about four times to me now, twice against
Materializers (what FTL calls the "Astral Ropes"), and twice against Fire
Elementals. The second time, I looked around carefully, and there were no
other monsters in the vicinity except the Fire Elemental (unless, of
course, if there *are* Air Elementals, and they're invisible).
I wouldn't call the "Rock Squids" Earth Elementals. Maybe the monsters on
the Firestaff level (although I think of them more as Stone Golems). I
wouldn't call a Ghost an Air Elemental, either. But that's just my
opinion as a long time D&D player.
We (I, my wife Lori, and our friend Kennita, both of whom normally hate
computer games) are getting close to the end. We had to abort our last
expedition, as we'd lost the Firestaff in an area where we couldn't get
back to it! We played on for awhile, and did find the Power Gem, though.
What a wonderful game! FTL, in a conference on CI$, says they are going
to try to come out with 4-6 new scenarios *a year*, using the same game
system, but not necessarily in a D&D/fantasy vein. We'll see.
Has anyone noticed characters' maximum Mana gradually dropping, perhaps as
a result of saving the game? Several characters have lost 2-8 Mana points
over the last few expeditions. Any ideas what could be doing it?

On the "Astral Rope" (FTL calls them "Materializers") level, some of the
buttons have *very* remote effects. You have to press a loose brick in
one part of the level to open the room (small one in the center of a much
larger one) with the key to one of the "colorful" locks. After you've
defeated the Knight there, search his possessions for the next key you
need. Then you need to push an obvious button with non-obvious effect.
It opens a room way at the other end of the dungeon with another Knight
and some items you will probably want/need.
This was by far the deadliest level up to that point. We finally came up
with strategies that would work against each of the monsters on the level,
the Materializers being the most deadly. However, the next level makes
this one seem like a cake-walk! Did you find the Darc armor? Not sure if
it's needed, but I like the concept of having one character wearing Lyte,
and the other in Darc (Hissssa, of course!) "Balance", you know!
Green gem: You pushed a switch, which dropped the chest containing the
gem down to the next level. Push it again to close the pit, and find a
way to get the green gem back where the chest was originally (behind the
grate). There are at least 2.5 ways of doing this.

Or don't push the switch at all, then the green gems never leaves! Argh!
I went back to the firestaff level after picking up the third RA key.
What a mistake! How many RA keys are there? And how in heck do you kill
a golem? -CC

The door trick helps. Also, the weaken spell. Other than that, jsut keep
hacking (in my dialect of english, jsut roughly translates to just)
luckily, they don't do much damage, but the do become tedious.
OK high levelers. I've cleared all of the "spider/knight" level 'cept the
area behind "Cowards will be hunted down and killed" What next? I suspect
it's time to head back up, as a brief journey to the next level down got
me slain very quickly. Any tips? -CC

Capt.Cook: You really ought to explore the "Cowards..." area if you can
take it (a green Magical Box and/or Horn of Fear might help). There are
some very useful items there. My take on the next level down is that it
is a death trap. If you haven't thoroughly explored the Firestaff level
yet, now is the time to do it. Then I'd proceed to the bottom level (mind
you, I've only tried this in a very odd way. I know at least four routes
to the bottom level, and can't say whether any of the other three will get
you killed). There is something you need down there, which will probably
prove useful on the Fire Elemental/Demon level.
Oops, just saw your "Golem" message. There are just four Ra keys that I
know of (the fourth is on the Firestaff level). As to killing Golems, I
took a tip from John Satriano -- fill your fighters full of Ku potions,
with maybe a few Ros potions thrown in for good measure. Then hack the
golems to bits. Also, they're slow, so you can use any techniques you've
developed for fighting slow, non-spellcasting monsters.

I never really got the horn of fear to do too much interesting. I'm not
sure what it is.
To tell you the truth, I do think that alot of these things are having
an effect, but no one knows exactly what the effect is. For instance, 1
necklace may decrease some monster's ability to hit first blow.
Unfortunatley, there's really no way to know what's happening. The horn
of fear may increase chances of a monster running before dying (some do
run as you have noticed).
The only real solution would be 1) alter the program to inform a user
somehow of what each item does OR 2)have the user to conduct vast studies
of what each item does. Very time consuming, and unlikely, considering
that every user is rushing to finish the game.
The bottom line is, however, (I could write an essay on this), even
though you're not sure exactly what an objet does, it adds to the
exciement and "mystery" to the game.

Hmmm. Well, I finished the game, and not until level 13/14 did I figure
out that those skeleton heads on the walls were more than just mere wall
decorations. So gotta start over! Missed a lot of things. For the most
part, I just sorted "brute forced" my way dow. Also, I'm curious as to
what are speedboots, and why are they used. I never picked up any of,
not even seen any of them.

I think I found 3 sets of "Boots of Speed", have the back-rank characters
wearing two. No terribly obvious advantage to them, unless my strategy of
outrunning fireballs doesn't work without them (I don't think it matters).
Lori and I have taken four or five or six parties down into the dungeon,
finding new areas and interesting things on virtually every level, every
time. Think we've got most of it sewn up in super-careful maps now,
though. (We x-ray every wall that can possibly be hiding something).

A.Hattlestad: Thanks. I thought it was something like that, but didn't
notice. Wonder if the extra load affects Stamina much.
Bill: The purple worm level was the most time-consuming for me (and
probably most people); take heart! Get your wife hooked on the game so
she'll play with you. Mine keeps track of spells, whether people are
getting hurt, and contributes to strategy, while I do the keyboarding (I
dodge monsters better).
In the "I hate cowards", you're in the right place, but you need to make
it through the curtains (there's another on the other side of that door).
How can you get the door open from here? I did it the first time by
getting the mouse in just the right position, moving and clicking.... but
there's a more reasonable method you've used before -- still need to get
your timing right, but there's more leeway. After that, it's just a
question of moving forward at precisely the right moments. May take quite
a few tries if you're as poor an arcade gamer as I am.

That's really sad, Dave. Reminds me of the time when I started "shading"
my work hours more and more until I was on a 25-hour work week
(programmers can sometimes get away with that, at least for a while),
because I was spending every available moment either creating scenarios
for D&D or playing in the CalTech Warlock D&D games. Maybe we need some
sort of self-help organization for gameaholics.
By the way, Dungeon Master is having almost as much effect, including on
our friend who's supposed to work fairly normal hours. She "hates
computer games", but "has to win Dungeon Master." Classic symptoms.

RCOSGROVE: You only need to solve three of those puzzles (the one you're
stuck on is the hardest; there are at least two ways to solve it,
however). There's another iron key hidden under something a little later
in the level; getting *all* of the iron keys simply gives you access to
one more room with some treasure and monsters (useful stuff, but not
required).

funny you should mention that. I've had DM pretty much since it has
existed, and last night, for the first time, I had that problem. Now, I
use 3 different save disks, so I just switched, and it worked with the
second one I tried. I have no idea what caused it, but you may try
formatting a couple of disks just in case. Note that the DM format is
nothing special - ie, you don't have to format them in DM, in fact, I use
Twister formatted DS disks (just cause that was what I had handy). Good
luck, if it really bothers you, you probably could return your disk to FTL
for the new version. -CC

Everyone does know that they can collect their save games on a double
sided disk and accumulate around 20 or so right? Each time you save the
game it renames the last on as DMGAME.BAK. If you then rename it to
something like DMGAME12.DAT, it just sits there. You can go back to it any
time by naming it DMGAME.DAT again. Anyone interested in having some Save
games uploaded? I'm only at level 7 or 8 but if any one wants I'll upload
a couple of the stages to getting there. If so just ask and you shall
receive.

The invisibility spell doesn't seem to do all that much good. Monsters
seem to have a
slightly harder time hitting you (they do a bit less
damage). The spell doesn't appear to last very long, though it's hard to
tell since there's no visual feedback from it. The big advantage is if
you want to sneak past an area entirely without encountering monsters.
Most can't see you, so won't attack, unless you attack first. (Maybe
that's what is really going on with the "short duration", is that it works
like AD&D invisibility -- goes away if you attack.)
